How it all started

I’ll never forget the day that started it all.

I was on the chairlift at Vail, taking a much-needed break with a fellow entrepreneur, and doing what I loved most.

After spending years building a service business in the IT industry that required lots of cold-calling, person-to-person selling, and long sales cycles, I was exhausted by the expensive, painstaking effort we had to put into building our sales teams and getting new clients.

Yes, our business was successful. I had three offices across the country, an amazing team, and industry recognition.

But there was something else happening in the world of entrepreneurship that was grabbing my attention.

I had been watching other entrepreneurs build business that leveraged the Internet to attract customers with very little traditional selling or overhead…

…and I wanted me some of that!

You never forget your first time...

After months of studying and trying to understand the technology and strategies behind building a sales process online, I had launched my first online product.

While riding up that chairlift, my phone vibrated, and I pulled it out of my pocket to check my messages.

I had just made a $275 sale while skiing with my friend at Vail.

No cold calls. No meetings. No negotiations.

$275 isn’t necessarily a lot of money, but it was enough to get my imagination working overtime on a vision of building businesses that leveraged the power of the internet and automation to give me more freedom, more money, and more impact.

I was off to the races...

Since then, the great people I’ve been able to work with and I have built online service businesses, training businesses, software businesses, media business, eComnmerce businesses, digital agencies, t-shirt businesses, and more.

We’ve built several of them into the multi-millions of dollars of revenue, sold one for millions of dollars…and yes, we’ve flopped, too!

We have also built communities of thousands of entrepreneurs, future entrepreneurs and business owners that we train, encourage, and mentor.

About
Mike Cooch

I’m a Virgo. I enjoy long walks on the San Diego beaches. I have a gentle soul, but I won’t be pushed around!

Just kidding.

I’m a “serial entrepreneur” who generates 6-7 big ideas before breakfast (conservative estimate) each day.

I have been passionate about entrepreneurship since the day I understood what that word meant, and in my early 20’s, after attempting to work for other people for a couple of years, I realized that I couldn’t accept doing anything other than being an entrepreneur for my career.

I eat, sleep and breath this stuff.

I’ve founded successful, seven-figure businesses in technology services, agency services, publishing, and ecommerce (and flopped on a variety of attempts as well…keepin’ it real!).

My businesses have been named to the INC Magazine List of Fastest Growing Companies three years in a row, and were also nominated as a Best Place to Work in their respective cities.

I have an MBA from Babson College (the #1 ranked entrepreneurship school in the world 25 years running – go Beavers!), where I’ve been a regular guest lecturer on the topic of ‘Managing a Rapidly Growing Business’, and a BS in Finance from Colorado State University.

But what’s most important to me…

Is that I’ve been able to live a fulfilling, adventurous life because of the businesses I’ve built.

I’m not going to start the next public company, and there are many, many people out there that are much smarter than me.

But I’ve been able to turn my passion for entrepreneurship into a life that keeps me excited to get out of bed every morning, allows me to spend time with my kids, gives me opportunities to travel, and has given me the privilege of working with thousands of amazing people.

Why do I tell you all of that personal stuff?

Because I want you to know that it’s possible, and that I’d love to help you achieve whatever personal goals you have related to building a business and lifestyle you love using entrepreneurship as your vehicle.

Who you are

We work with entrepreneurs that:

  • Have a growth mindset
  • Are hungry and driven to make more impact
  • Are realistic, mature, and self-accountable
  • Take action (we want entrepreneurs, not students!)
  • Want to build lifestyle businesses (read the definition below)

Does that sound like you? Good, then stick around!

what is a Lifestyle business?

It’s important that we take a minute to define a ‘lifestyle business’ so that we’re on the same page about what that means and what our goals are.

To us, a lifestyle business is a business whose primary reason for existence is to allow for a particular lifestyle for the owner of that business.

It’s just as important to clear up what ‘lifestyle business’ doesn’t mean to us as well:

It doesn’t mean it has to be small.

It doesn’t mean that it has to make less money.

It doesn’t mean that is has to have less impact on the world.

It just means that the primary reasons for existence are not shareholder returns, growth in valuation, or going public – common reasons for existence in the business world.

Why is this important?

It’s important for a few reasons:

  1. Very few businesses go public or require huge amounts of venture capital – benchmarks of success for years in the entrepreneurship culture and community.
  2. Many, many people who aren’t necessarily interested in or trained for running businesses for shareholder return are building wonderful businesses that give them an incredible life, and there has never been a better time in history to be able to do that.
  3. Building a lifestyle business requires certain decisions that may not be ideal for investors, partners or employees, so you should be very clear about your goals, with them and yourself.

While we have built and operated successful businesses that were focused on more traditional measures, that is no longer our goal (at least for now and for the businesses we operate), and that’s not what the content and training found on LVRG will be about either.

Our
Vision

To build a global community of entrepreneurs that are living the dream…their dream…with more freedom, more money, and more impact.

B.H.A.G.

To meaningfully impact the lives of 1,000,000 entrepreneurs by the year 2025.

Our Core Values

Lead With Value – give before we ask.

10X Value – if we can’t look someone straight in the eye and know with certainty that our product should deliver at least 10X what they paid in value…don’t ship it.

Be the Example – have fun, make money, and live the dream so that we inspire others.

Respect the Dream – entrepreneurs face challenges that would crush most people on a daily basis…we want to support and encourage, not minimize the challenges you’re facing.

Simple, Scalable, Repeatable, Recurring & Profitable – principles for every business we run and everything we teach.

People First, Profits Second – we want to build a long-term community of customers and friends that support each other for the long haul.

Our Purpose

We love entrepreneurship…that’s our passion.

We believe that entrepreneurs have the ability to create what we call ‘Evolved Capitalism’, a future where we have less large public companies and Wall Street calling the shots for entire communities and countries, and more of thriving small and medium-sized businesses operating with a sense of connection to the people they employ and the customers they serve.

Although an official definition of capitalism defines it as “an economic and political system where trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state”, we think of capitalism a little differently.

Capitalism

noun

an economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.

synonyms: free enterprise, private enterprise, the free market; enterprise culture “the capitalism of emerging nations”

We believe that our economy is best when controlled by private owners who have ‘a stake in the outcome’, as entrepreneur Jack Stake so eloquently stated in his book by the same name.

When people understand how the work they do contributes to their neighbors and communities, they act and feel differently than when they can’t see the connection between their labor and how it ultimately benefits someone.

That’s largely been lost in our world of Fortune 1000 companies and Wall Street traders that view things only in terms of the latest quarterly results.

That’s why we believe in ‘Evolved Capitalism’...

In case that sounds a little fluffy, let’s be clear:

We are 110% for building kick-ass, competitive businesses that gush profits!

The cool thing (really freakin’ cool!) is that we live in an era where we can have both kick-ass companies AND a more evolved approach to capitalism, thanks the the incredible advances of technology that enable us to automate more process, reach more people, and work when and where we want.

That’s awesome, and our Purpose is to play our part in advancing ‘Evolved Capitalism’ to businesses and communities around the world.
